Our History
The
Freeport Concert Band traces its roots back to 1921 when Bill Dayton organized a band in
Freeport, Long Island, New York. (Photo of the Freeport
Fire Department Band, led by Bill Dayton). Dayton led the band for 50 years, from 1921 to 1971. (Photo

Ned Mahoney, our conductor emeritus, took over the band, and continued it until 1976.
Casimier (Casey) Albinsky then assumed leadership. The band left Freeport in the Fall of 1983, and took temporary residence in Franklin Square.
Ted Mordoff took over the band in the Spring of 1986 when Albinsky resigned for reasons of health. That Fall the band moved to Rockville Centre. Mordoff remained until 1998.
Raoul Camus was our conductor from 1998 to December 2010. Through his leadership, the band grew in size. In January 2009, the band moved back to Freeport, New York.
We now welcome our new conductor, Sandra Vigliotti, who assumed leadership in February 2011.
For many of the years of the band's existence, the guiding spirit was Stan Reich (1925-2001). In addition to being a trumpet player, he served as president, executive director, personnel manager and historian.
In 2011, the band celebrated 90 years of community involvement. We received citations from
the village of Freeport and Nassau County.
